Managing Your Digital Assets

Curating vs. Storing

In the digital age, we generate thousands of photos, videos, and documents. When planning your digital legacy, it is vital to understand the difference between bulk storage and a curated collection.

My Last Words is designed to be your curated collection. It is the secure vault for the specific messages, final instructions, and defining media that you want securely delivered to your delegates. It is not intended to replace your bulk cloud storage or physical hard drives.

Best Practices for Bulk Media

For the lifetime of photos stored on your phone, comprehensive financial records, or large video libraries, we recommend utilizing dedicated bulk storage solutions:

  • Physical Drives: Maintain a localized external hard drive containing your complete digital archive.
  • Cloud Providers: Utilize services like Google Drive, Apple iCloud, or Microsoft OneDrive for daily, automated backups of your bulk media.

The Link to Your Vault: You can use your My Last Words vault to store the instructions, passwords, or physical locations necessary for your delegates to access these larger bulk storage drives after you have passed.

Lifespans of Digital Mediums

No storage medium lasts forever. When organizing your digital assets, keep these general lifespans in mind:

  • USB Flash Drives / SSDs: 5 to 10 years (requires periodic powering on to prevent data fade).
  • Mechanical Hard Drives (HDD): 3 to 5 years of active use.
  • Cloud Storage: Indefinite, provided the subscription is maintained and account access is successfully transferred to your heirs.
